The Top 10 Games of E3 2009

10. Super Mario Galaxy 2 – Wii

How could I not be stoked about the sequel to the best game on the Nintendo Wii? It’s the first time a 3D Mario title has had a direct sequel on the same system. According to Nintendo, 90% of the levels will be new. If the first title wasn’t reason enough to pick up a Wii there is certainly no excuse now.

9. Metroid: Other M – Wii

This game took me completely by surprise. Team Ninja and Nintendo teaming up to make a dark and complex Metroid game? Bring it. With action that switches between 1st and 3rd person, this looks like it will change the series the same way PRIME did on the Gamecube. Can Nintendo bring a more mature game to their own platform? Yes, Reggie, yes they can.

8. Assassin’s Creed 2 – PS3/360

Looks like it fixes all the problems of the 1st title, namely the repetition, and adds a ton of weapons and abilities. Graphics appear to be spot on too. Surely this will end up being one of the must have titles of the holiday season. Comes out several days after I get back from my honeymoon. 😛

7. Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker – PSP

TRAILER: Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker

I couldn’t believe how in depth this looked for a PSP game. As Kojima himself said, this is the true MGS5. The story takes place 10 years after Snake Eater and is a direct sequel. It’s the missing link in the Metal Gear universe and tells the story of Outer Haven. When the trailer rolled it brought back memories of my first Metal Gear experiences and that is definitely a good thing.

6. Shadow Complex – Xbox Live Arcade

Cliffy B! Awesome wardrobe choice taking the stage at a MICROSOFT press conference…a picture of Bill Gates mug shot on your tee? Beautiful. Well, your game looks beautiful too. Epic is delivering a game that will play like Super Metroid, with a love story twist. Save the girl? Get sucked into a war you never wanted? This is what Rambo IV should have been. Looks perfectly polished!

5. God of War III – PS3

God of War III

What hasn’t been said? The demo was amazing, the gameplay looks brutal, and who doesn’t want to go toe to toe (or maybe body to finger) with a gargantuan fire-titan? This could be the definitive action game of next-gen consoles. Look for this to be a system seller for Sony.

4. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – PS3

Uncharted 2

GAMEPLAY TRAILER: Uncharted 2:Among Thieves

Naughty Dog blew me away with the gameplay of the first Uncharted, and they have done nothing but improve with the second. No game on the market looks as fluid as this. Did anyone else also notice the phenomenal physics engine? Every piece of foliage on that rooftop reacted to the wind from the helicopter’s blades. Stunning.

3. Final Fantasy XIII – PS3/360

Final Fantasy XIII

TRAILER: Final Fantasy XII

This game looks better everytime I see it. The development cycle has been long, but it looks to have been worth it. Spring 2010, hurry up and get here! With an intriguing story, the possibility of intact Japanese dialog on the PS3 Blu-Ray, and a combo-type battle system, look for Final Fantasy XIII to be one of the best RPG’s ever released…and that’s saying quite a lot!

2. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – PS3/360

Castlevania:Lords of Shadow

There are no words. I had no idea how awesome this would be. The trailer has left me speechless. Where do I start? The music? Chilling, epic, and perfect. The narration? Patrick Stewart…what else do you want? The gameplay? Looks like God of War meets Devil May Cry. And on top of that they’re promising an open world, ready to be explored, with hundreds of things to uncover and accomplish? Sign me up. NOW.

1. The Last Guardian – PS3

The Last Guardian

Is it any surprise? Team ICO stunned me with their last two games and this looks to deliver just as much if not more. Until you’ve played Ueda’s games there really isn’t anything to compare them to. The ambiance, the heart, the beauty…this truly is a work of art. What will the boy’s bond with the creature be? Is he related to the horned race from ICO? What is his connection to Wander? So many questions can be amassed after just viewing the trailer. This was game of show and in my opinion, nothing else even came close.

Solid list, I wouldn’t argue against any of these games but I would go to 11 a la Spinal Tap to include Scribblenauts.

Scribblenauts is a cool looking game with an interesting concept, but I’m hesitant to list it until I see if/how fast the novelty wears off and how many words you can actually write. Just like Project Natal, if this can actually deliver, it will be amazing.
